Make It Beautiful
Whether or not you value beauty, you can’t help but respond to it. When you see a beautiful landscape, your mouth drops in awe. When a beautiful woman walks in the room, your eyes will fix on her. Our reaction to beauty is innate, and I believe that beauty is a gift to humanity that can inspire and uplift our spirits.
As an artist who is very visual, beauty is deeply intertwined with my values and desires. It is nourishing to my soul and fuels my creativity.
I feel centered and invigorated when my environment is beautiful, so I design my home down to the last detail, organize every nook and cranny, and then fill it with flowers.
I feel beautiful when I wear clothing and beauty products that enhance my appearance and act as a visual expression of my personality, so I put a lot of thought into curating my wardrobe.
Beauty is like truth. Both are undeniable and eternal in their most pure forms. But the flavors of beauty that inspire a person are subjective, and I call that taste. The expression of beauty by the individual is also subjective, and I call that style.
Style is not synonymous with fashion, because fashion is a group expression of beauty driven by trends, culture, and commerce. Fashion is subject to public opinion, while style is a personal decision. The fashion world can be judgmental- there is a right and wrong way to dress, and the rules changes quickly. Style is not about who wore it best. Style is about knowing yourself and sharing that with the world in a creative and authentic way.
I don’t think that curating a beautiful wardrobe, designing a beautiful home, and using beauty products is superficial. If you desire to feel and look beautiful, then I say that is a great way to honor your body. If you feel drawn to share your perception of beauty, then that is a noble pursuit. But if you are aspiring to be beautiful and have beautiful things so that you feel accepted, superior, or wanted, then you are driven by ego and missing the point.
